Bruce To Participate In AIDS WALK Los Angeles October 16th, 2005
Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to Proclaim October 16 AIDS Walk Los Angeles Day
More than 25,000 people from across the Los Angeles metropolitan area are expected to hit the streets on October 16 to raise money for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and other local AIDS service organizations.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 6, 2005 -- The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will proclaim October 16, 2005 to be AIDS Walk Los Angeles Day. On that day, more than 25,000 people from across the Los Angeles metropolitan area are expected to hit the streets to raise money for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and other local AIDS service organizations.
“Los Angeles County is proud to support AIDS Walk Los Angeles. Although we have come a long way since the days when AIDS first began afflicting our community, we must continue working toward a cure,” said Los Angeles Board of Supervisors Chair Gloria Molina. “It is my hope that residents from across the county will participate in AIDS Walk Los Angeles and help bring attention to this cause.”
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are now more than one million people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, and 40,000 additional people are infected each year. In Los Angeles, between 54,000 and 57,000 people are living with HIV or AIDS, enough to fill Dodger Stadium. More than 2,000 people become newly infected each year, and one out of five people with HIV in Los Angeles do not know they are infected.
“We are grateful to the Board of Supervisors for recognizing the power of AIDS Walk Los Angeles,” said Craig E. Thompson, executive director of APLA. “We hope that on this day – and every day – Angelenos will remember their friends and neighbors living with HIV/AIDS and take steps to assure adequate attention and funding for the services they need to stay alive.”
For the first time in its history, APLA will provide cash grants to HIV/AIDS organizations outside of Los Angeles County. The grants will be allocated to three organizations affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita: AIDS Alabama, Montrose Clinic of Houston, and NO/AIDS Task Force of New Orleans, which was forced to cancel its own AIDS Walk scheduled for September 25.
“More than twenty years ago the people of Los Angeles set a standard for caring and compassionate action that has grown into one of the most powerful forces in the fight against AIDS,” said AIDS Walk Founder Craig Miller. “Each and every year since then, our community has shown a deep and personal understanding of how important it is to end the AIDS epidemic.”
AIDS Walk Los Angeles is Southern California’s largest HIV/AIDS fundraising event and has raised more than $50 million for APLA and other local AIDS organizations. This year’s VIPs and celebrity guests include Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Roma Maffia (Nip/Tuck), Rita Moreno (West Side Story, OZ), Kathy Najimy (The Kathy and Mo Show), Jai Rodriguez (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), Hal Sparks (Queer as Folk), John Spencer (The West Wing), Bruce Vilanch (Hairspray), and others. The AIDS Walk begins and ends at San Vicente Boulevard, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, in West Hollywood. The 10K (6.2 mile) route passes through the streets of West Hollywood and Los Angeles.
AIDS Walk Los Angeles is supported by the generous gifts of corporations and individuals, including Wells Fargo, Hilton Family of Hotels, Marilyn & Jeffrey Katzenberg, NBC-4, Telemundo, Paramount Studios, Robinsons-May, United Airlines, Clear Channel Radio and Oakwood Corporate Housing. Created and produced by Craig R. Miller / MZA Events, AIDS Walk Los Angeles drew more than 25,000 people and raised nearly $2.9 million in 2004.

Tony's Name New Category: Now We Can Only Imagine!
PLAYBILL.COM'S
THEATRE WEEK IN REVIEW
Sept. 17-23:
The Replacements
By Robert Simonson
September 23, 2005
The idea has been wafting about Broadway and its side streets for some months, but on Sept. 22 the official word was handed down: The Tony Awards Administration Committee has crowned a new category sure to stir up a Shubert Alley's worth of dust: Best Performance by an Actor/Actress Recreating a Role. The trophy opens of a whole new world of recognition for those brave and frequently unsung souls who follow Mr. and Mrs. Star into the leading parts of a long-running play or musical. Latecoming Tevye Harvey Fierstein is probably kicking his milkcart around the Minskoff that the change didn't come a season earlier. But you can bet that a few actors who have joined a Broadway show since last June have already put in calls to their producers insisting that their hats be thrown into the 2005-06 ring.
According to a statement released by the committee, those actors eligible for this category "must not have appeared in the role when the production opened on Broadway. They must also be contracted in the role for a minimum of six months of public performances. Additionally, the producers may not submit more than two candidates per 'Long-Running' Show for the Award (including both Actor and Actress) for any such season."
The new Tony is, in one sense, a Godsend for producers. Whereas in the past, the only carrots they possessed to lure name performers into established productions were promises of money (checks which could never compare to those offered by Hollywood anyway) and the dream of legitimacy-confirming, ego-boosting rave reviews. Now they can dangle the prospect of a shiny mantlepiece ornament. Few actors out there have met an award they didn't covet.
However, the category could also easily prove a nettlesome source of controversy and grievance. After all, which two of a show's eligible candidates will the producers' put forth? How do they avoid offending the unnominated? And then there's the potential for hypocrisy. Certainly starry names like Fierstein, Reba McIntyre (Annie Get Your Gun), Brooke Shields (Wonderful Town) and Bruce Vilanch (Hairspray) would have had a very good chance at getting nominated. But will producers extend the same courtesy to lesser known but respected theatre journeymen? Certainly, for talented, uber replacement actors like Charlotte D'Amboise and Brent Barrett, the new prize represents a golden opportunity. But they are to be forgiven if they are cynical about the probability of being remembered by their employers come Tony time.

THE ARISTOCRATS COMES TO NASHVILLE
I know the rest of the world could care less, because you don't live in Tennessee, but I'm excited and I'm going to see it, dammit! If there are any other Vilanchites out here in the hills, now's your chance. Plus there's a cast of thousands! As you know, Mister V is currently filming Celebrity Fit Club 3! Pray For Him!!!! :-)
No Nudity, No Violence, Unspeakable Obscenity - "A man walks into a talent agent's office with his family and says, Have I got an act for you! The talent gent replies, So what do you do?" So begins "The Aristocrats," a joke that has een handed down from comedian to comedian for decades but is rarely told on stage. The next part of the joke varies, allowing for improvisation, and the only requirement in telling the joke is that it be as offensive as possible.
