Like a great man once said before slapping a blast shield on his student’s head en route to the ruins of a recently blown-up planet, “Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them.” So when you read the insane TMIs of celebrity autobiographies – the cream of which we’ve already presented to you – it’s easy to think, “No way I just read what I read.” So it’s up to the fine comedic talent behind “Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words” to make sure you can at least believe your ears. Here are some of their choicest cuts.

Did You Get Bruce? Well P-Town Did!

Ptown’s got Bruce

Bruce Vilanch.
Did you get Bruce?

We did. A whole lot. Again. The never-ending funnyman, stand-up comic and writer can still bank on lesser profile politicians, an ingenious Christina/Cher mash up, and most importantly, himself.

Gus Klein: You regularly make this trip to Ptown. Have you got any new shtick you want to tease us with?

Bruce Vilanch: I’ve just lost 85 lbs, so now I can do that strip I use to threaten people with. Hugh Jackman choreographed it for me. It’s hard to remove the g-string when the iron shafts spring out from between my fingers, but we’ve got an ingenious move for that.

GK: What have you found ironic or humorous this year on a personal level, has it reflected in your work?

BV: Sarah Palin is the gift that just keeps giving, isn’t she? The only thing more surreal is reality television and the only thing more surreal than that is working in reality television.

GK: You recently mentioned you began working on the Michael Jackson tour; what was the synergy in that kind of project?

BV: …Synergy? That’s an awfully big word for a boy your age, Blanket. What does it mean?…

GK: Any new projects you’re working on that teeter on a successful or disaster border?

BV: I’ve been working on a movie that shoots this fall that reunites Christina Aguilera and Cher. They last met in a changing room at Bob Mackie’s. It’s called BURLESQUE and Cher runs the Pussycat Dolls and Christina is a hot new pussy. There will be lots of bumping, grinding and black lace. I can’t wait. I keep writing in hot young boyfriends and nobody seems to mind.

GK: 8 months in, thoughts on Obama?

BV: I’m glad we are holding his feet to the fire, even though that’s a horrifying metaphor. Gay people had to tell him that we will not be regarded as second class citizens, and we’ve done that, and we must continue to do that until he effects change we can believe in. We put up with shit that no other minority would put up with.

GK: It’s been a slow year on a personal level for many people, LGBT included; with unemployment, economy etc; any career advice during tough times?

BV: rentboy.com. 20 more lbs and I place my ad…

GK: You’ve kept a considerable amount of weight off, has it affected any of the characters/people you sometimes introduce yourself as?

BV: Fewer people believe I’m Jerry Garcia now than used to, except in pockets of San Francisco, where they still swear I’m him. I want what they’re smoking.

GK: It’s going to be an eclectic holiday mix of people (as opposed to playing to locals) does that make for an easier or funner crowd? Have you done this venue before?

BV: Ptown is always the most amazing collection of individuals, including locals of all kinds. There are summer people and winter people and Portuguese fisherfolk — I do native dances for them — and then there are strangers from everywhere who’ve seen me on TV or in Hairspray. It’s a smart, rowdy group. I played this Vixen last year and what I principally remember is you have to finish on time because there are sporty lesbians waiting for the pool table and they brook no trout.

Bruce Vilanch performs in the Madeira Room at The Pilgrim House on Friday, 8.21.09; Shows at 7pm & 9pm. For more information visit the Vixen website, or call 508.487.6424 to purchase tickets.

Wenda Watch: Class, Commercials, Madness – Divine (That Is)

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Hi Don and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I just got back from Palm Springs and wanted to share with you this picture of Bruce and me.

His workshop started at 11 am so the bitch had to be up EARLY to get all this mess on but I wasn’t going to miss it for the world. When I walked into the lobby of Hotel Zoso (guest hotel of The Moxie Project, a project to make Palm Springs a center for Gay entertainment) I was hoping to just say hi to Bruce and maybe get a pic. Imagine my surprise when there he was sitting all alone in the lobby. Well did I pull up a chair or what?? I grilled him about Divine Madness, Paul Lynde, his amazing recent 85 pound weight loss and more. He is (as you know) an absolutely down to earth sweet heart of a guy. I told him I was friends with you and promised to get a picture and he said “Oh! For the website, of course.” and posed with me for this one. I hope you like it. Bruce was also a judge for the commercial making contest they held. The link to my entry is below. Holler if you need any more info on the event or Bruce’s doings!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY again Don! You truly are DIVINE!

NAKED BOYS SINGING Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Launches New Website
Back to the Article
by BWW News Desk

NAKED BOYS SINGING!, the fifteen-song celebration of the male form will hit yet another milestone: it will celebrate its tenth anniversary on Saturday July 25th. The Naked Boys are appearing on New World Stages Stage 4, graciously shared with the other (clothed) Boyz of New World Stages: Altar Boyz! New World Stages is located at 340 West 50th Street, between 8th & 9th Avenues. Naked Boys plays Fridays at 10:30pm and Saturday evenings at 6pm.

To further mark the occasion, the producers of the show recently launched a new website! Check it out at www.NakedBoysSinging.com.

Still drawing both equally gay and straight crowds, NAKED BOYS has become a New York mainstay, while the London production, which recently opened to critical acclaim, announced it will soon transfer to the West End. Other productions are currently running in Las Vegas and Provincetown, and more will open within the next year, including a production in Lisbon, and another in Berlin.

Naked Boys Singing! is produced by Jamie Cesa, Carl D. White, Hugh Hayes, and Tom Smedes. It is directed and was conceived by Robert Schrock, and choreographed by Jeffry Denman. Schrock and a team of 12 writers — Stephen Bates, Marie Cain, Perry Hart, Shelly Markham, Jim Morgan, David Pevsner, Rayme Sciaroni, Mark Savage, Ben Schaechter, Trance Thompson, Mark Winkler and two-time Emmy Award winning Bruce Vilanch — have written a bouncy (pun intended) and fabulous musical revue that reminds us that clothes alone do not make the man. The show opened Off-Broadway at The Actors’ Playhouse in July 1999. The film version was released in 2008 by TLA Releasing and remains one of their top sellers on DVD.

Ticket prices are $69.50, which includes $1.50 facility fee. Tickets for Naked Boys Singing! are available through Telecharge.com at 212-239-6200 or at the New World Stages Box Office. For Group Sales, call 212-302-4848, ext 18. The show runs at a lean, hard 70 minutes, without an intermission.

Celebrity Autobiography: Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Perry, and Bruce Vilanch Lined Up

Los Angeles Times
Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Perry, Bruce Vilanch lined up for ‘Celebrity Autobiography’
5:02 PM, June 2, 2009

Here’s a hot tip for the “reporters” of “TMZ”: The star quotient will be unusually high June 15 outside West Hollywood’s Largo at the Coronet Theatre. That’s because celebrities like Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Perry, Carrie Fisher, Craig Bierko and others will be performing the stage comedy “Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words” for a one-night-only engagement.

The play, which satirizes the profitable literary genre known as the Hollywood autobiography, is a bicoastal theatrical hit, with a version currently playing at New York’s Triad theater on the Upper West Side with a rotating cast. That production recently won a 2009 Drama Desk Award for unique theatrical experience.

In addition to the above-mentioned performers, the L.A. one-night event will also include Fred Willard, Tracee Ellis, Kevin Pollak, Bruce Vilanch, Leslie Ann Warren, Laraine Newman and the show’s creator, Eugene Pack. The performance will benefit the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

“Celebrity Autobiography” originated in L.A. and was later filmed for broadcast on the Bravo cable channel. The show features readings from a rotating roster of real celebrity autobiographies, including those by Sylvester Stallone, Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spears, Mr. T and Ivana Trump.
